Sir, As a parent of two students at King Alfred's, I view the announcement that the school is contemplating seeking Foundation School status with concern.

First, parents are being offered a derisory four weeks for initial consultation, followed by a further four weeks if (or should that be when?) the governors decide to go ahead. This period does not, apparently, include a public meeting.

Second, the wider community in Wantage and Grove is not being consulted. Foundation School status is clearly an issue of public interest. It might lead to a revival of the 'super-school' concept, in spite of the fact that in 2003 the majority of residents clearly expressed their opposition.

Third, nowhere in the information sent out to parents by King Alfred's is the case against Foundation School status set out. I do not feel that I have sufficient unbiased information to enable me to make an informed decision on the issue. In the interests of local democracy, I call upon the principal and governors of King Alfred's to instigate a proper process of consultation. This should last for at least six months, be extended to the wider community of Wantage and Grove, and include a series of public meetings at which the issues could be thoroughly debated. It is simply unacceptable that such an important decision should be rushed through without a full discussion and parents having access to all the relevant facts.
