Thanks for your commonsense editorial in response to Green MEP 'nanny' Caroline Lucas wagging her finger at the county council pension fund for investing in an arms manufacturer, Weak case (Oxford Mail, May 11).
You are right to say that, if we followed her advice, we would find some reason for not investing in just about every business on the Stock Exchange.
It was not really surprising, coming from the fringe Green Party who, given half a chance, would replace our roads with dirt tracks, closing Oxford for business and, no doubt, declaring a nuclear free zone along the way.
However, I was disappointed in Unison joining them.
It represents our staff and pensioners to whom we have a duty to maximise the income of their pension fund to provide for their pensions.
God knows, with Gordon Brown creaming off £5bn per annum in his pensions stealth tax, we need to work hard to protect our staff pension fund, not fritter it away by imposing silly, politically correct and tokenistic restrictions.
KEITH MITCHELL Leader, Oxfordshire County Council
