Friends of a teenage boy killed in Oxford's Eastern Bypass tragedy parachuted from 15,000 feet to collect £3,000 to help fund a memorial garden.

Ten friends and family of Marshall Haynes, of Greater Leys, including his father Dwain, 38, made the leap from a plane at Weston-on-the-Green airfield on Saturday.

The sponsored jump raised more than £3,000 for the Marshall Haynes Memorial Fund. It will pay for community tribute events and maintenance of the memorial garden at Peers School, Littlemore, where Marshall was a pupil.

The parachutists were delayed for almost six hours due to bad weather, but once the plane reached 15,000 feet all ten fundraisers, wearing tribute 'Jump for Marshall' T-shirts, took the plunge.

Jumper Suzi McFarlane said: "I did enjoy it, but it was very scary because we were hanging around waiting for so long.

"A few people were very apprehensive but after they did it they all thanked me and thought it was fantastic.

"Dwain said he thought it was the best thing he had ever done. Everyone landed OK, although a few did fall over on their bums."

Around 30 friends and family turned out to support the fundraisers.

Half the sponsorship money will be spent on maintaining the Marshall Haynes Memorial Garden at Peers School and the rest will go towards tributes and future events, including memorial football matches.

The 13-year-old, a keen football player and fan, was one of four people killed in the crash on Oxford's Eastern Bypass a year ago.

He was being carried with friends in a car during a birthday outing when the vehicle veered out of control on Oxford's Eastern Bypass into oncoming traffic.

Only one of the seven boys crammed into the car was wearing a seatbelt, while Marshall was sitting in the boot.

Liam Hastings, 13, of Rose Hill, Josh Bartlett, 13, of Blackbird Leys, and Howard Hillsdon, 21, of Yarnton, also died in the crash.

Driver Angela Dublin, of Headington, is serving a two-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to four counts of causing death by dangerous driving.
