Sir I wonder if all your readers are aware of the scale of destruction which will occur if the RWE npower application to fill Lake E at Radley with ash from Didcot Power Station is approved: 1: Over 1,000 trees chopped down There are over 2,000 trees in this area. Although some will remain, chainsaws will be heard as well over 1,000 trees are felled.

2: The lakes will be drained Lake E will be drained once larger fish have been removed. Everything else will then die: smaller fish, invertebrates and plants. These are food for other creatures in the area, including birds like the hobby and kingfisher as well as water voles and otters. The water level in Lake F will drop significantly since only a narrow and porous strip of land separates the two lakes. Much of the plant and animal life in this lake will die and the lake may never recover fully.

3: A huge open cast quarry will be created An army of bulldozers, excavators and dump trucks will then move in. Hundreds of thousands of tonnes of material will be moved as the depth of the hole is increased to around 13 metres in places. The narrow road which links Thrupp Lane with the Sustrans cycleway will be affected by the movement of excavated material.

4: A high bank round the remains of Lake E Some of the excavated clay will be used to build an embankment all the way round the site. This will be almost four metres high and will tower over the surrounding land.

If your readers do not want this destruction to occur they should send an objection to Oxfordshire County Council by April 13. See www.saveradleylakes.org.uk for details.
