The just-launched Hyundai Amica is a prime example of a little car that offers a lot.

Economy, equipment, and sensible pricing for the Amica from £5,995 is the type of package buyers increasingly want to see, especially at a time when rising energy, council tax and utility bills are dropping on to doormats nationwide.

Hyundai's starter model range includes a new 1.1-litre petrol engine the only unit available with a combined cycle fuel consumption of up to 52.3mpg, making the Amica a formidable contender in the city car bracket. With the range backed by Hyundai's five-year, unlimited mileage, fully transferable warranty, it will undoubtedly draw many newcomers to the firm's showrooms.

Hyundai UK's managing director, Tony Whitehorn, backs this view, and said: "We're confident the Amica has a competitive role to play. It was our third best-selling car in Europe in 2005 and the Amica has the potential to win valuable new customers. It will have particular appeal to those for whom reliability and ease of use are key considerations." The Amica comes in two well-equipped trim levels, and the entry-level GSI gets power steering, a split-folding rear seat, driver's airbag, tinted glass, boot light, anti-lock brakes, front electric windows, and a CD stereo system.

For just £500 more, the CDX trim adds keyless entry, remote central locking, front fog lamps, alloy wheels, air conditioning, leather trim for the steering wheel and gear knob, body-coloured door mirrors and handles, and a rear spoiler.
