Alan Woodley A Didcot card player is hoping for a full house next month when he stages the town's first poker tournament.

Alan Woodley, of Cherwell Close, has been playing the game for 10 years and has appeared in tournaments on TV.

He hopes the public competition in Didcot, from noon on Sunday, December 11, at the newly refurbished Towers Country Club next to Didcot Power Station on the Northern Perimeter Road, will be the first of many.

Mr Woodley, who plays in his spare time, said there was a burgeoning network of players in the south of England and many travelled hundreds of miles to events, clubs and home games.

The event is aimed at everyone from experienced players to novices, and there will be free lessons on offer before the serious games begin.

Mr Woodley said: "If people are nervous or new to the game we will be giving lessons on the basic rules.

"There are only 10 hands to learn so it is one of the easiest games to pick up."
