Police made no arrests in Oxford city centre as drinkers peacefully welcomed extended pub opening hours on Friday night.

No-one was arrested for drink-related crimes in the city centre but police hauled in two women and a man following a 40-strong brawl at a bowling alley in Blackbird Leys.

Two women were arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and a man was arrested for obstructing a police officer during the fight at The Bowlplex, at the Ozone Leisure Centre, at Kassam Stadium, which saw one woman taken to hospital at 1.30am on Saturday.

The bowling alley was celebrating its first night with extended opening hours until 2am at the weekend.

But at The Cock and Camel, in George Street, revellers were raising a quieter glass to two more hours' drinking until 1am.

Sarah Massay, 32, of Abingdon said: "It makes a difference. Now it's more like it is on holiday. It would be a shame if people spoiled it."

In Gloucester Green, David Thomas, manager of The Goose, opened an extra half-hour until 11.30pm.

He said: "It didn't make a massive difference but people didn't disappear at 11pm. The attitude has been really good."

Police believe the freezing temperatures forced many drinkers to stay at home, but it was still a busy time for Oxford's taxi firms.

Taxi driver Akhtar Hussain, 33, of Cowley, said: "We're used to a rush all at once, but now it's spread out over the night because the closing times are staggered."

An extra hour of drinking time at clubs in Park End Street and Hythe Bridge Street meant added police on the streets.

Chief Insp Stephanie Cook, of Oxford police, said: "It was nothing out of the ordinary and there wasn't the high volume of people we expect on a Friday."
