The Oxford United supporter who ran onto the Kassam Stadium pitch after Danny Morgan's 88th-minute equaliser against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday, could face a possible three-year ban from football.
The man, whom the club and police are in the process of identifying, got carried away at United's late leveller and burst onto the pitch to join in the celebrations with the U's players.
He was quickly grabbed by stewards, who escorted him to the sidelines.
The club last night confirmed that they were in discussions with Thames Valley Police about the incident, and said that the so-called 'fan' would be looking at "a lengthy ban".
Kassam Stadium safety officer Tony Ashley said: "The incident was included in the referee's report, and that is a matter of course.
"We are in the process of identifying the culprit, with a view to prosecuting."
Under the Football Offences Act, encroaching onto the field of play is treated the same as racist chanting and throwing items onto the pitch.
The maximum punishment is a three-year ban from all domestic football matches.
Should the Crown Prosecution Service decide not to go through and prosecute, however, the club will issue their own punishment.
This is likely to be in the region of a one-year ban.
"The most disappointing thing for me is that people still feel the need to run onto the pitch," Ashley said.
"In the eyes of the law, it is a criminal offence, and people must realise that.
"We just cannot afford to have people on the pitch. If it continues, and we are consistently getting into trouble, the club could face part closure.
"The stewards reacted very quickly though to remove the person."
