smoke alarm Neighbours rescued an elderly woman when fire broke out in the kitchen of her flat in north Oxford.
Firefighters were called to the scene in Woodstock Road at lunchtime on Saturday, but on arrival found the woman had been led to safety and the small blaze put out.
The woman suffered very minor smoke inhalation and was attended to by paramedics on the scene.
Although a smoke alarm was fitted, the battery had been removed. Firefighters first cleared smoke from the flat using fans, then fitted a new smoke alarm to the property.
A fire and rescue service spokesman said that the occupants were very lucky but the working alarm would make the flat safer in the future.
Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue will fit smoke alarms on request. Call the Community Fire Safety Helpline on 0800 325 999.
