OXFORD United fan Brad Harris had a double celebration on Saturday - not only did his team win 1-0 but his girlfriend agreed to marry him in front of 8,000 witnesses.

Romantic Brad, 25, popped the question to partner Emma Nightall, 24, on the pitch at The Manor during half-time.

The cunning footie fan had set things up with the club and community liaison man Peter Rhoades-Brown days before.

Brad said: "As an excuse, I nipped out for a coffee at half time. Peter had a presentation on the pitch and then said he had something special to do.

"He called Emma down and I came out of the players entrance, to various chants from the Oxford fans, and asked her to marry me."

Emma said: "At football Brad can be quite laddish, so I thought it was romantic of him to admit he wanted to marry me in front of all those people.

"It's the most romantic thing he's ever done. It was a bit of a shock, but it was very memorable in front of 8,000 people.

"All the fans were coming up to us after the game and congratulating us."

The pair met two and a half years ago when they were both working at WH Smiths in Marlborough, Wiltshire, and have been going out for just over two years.

Emma said her parents were 'over the moon' at the engagement and the couple plan to marry this summer.

Brad and Emma live in Stratton St Margaret, Swindon, but Emma said: "Inside our whole house is blue and yellow - so he feels like it's a little patch of Oxford."

Oxford-born Brad said he and Emma would not be marrying at The Manor - because the club has no licence.

He admitted that holding the wedding there might be over-doing it anyway.

Both the couple are season ticket holders - Emma first started going to games so she would not be a 'football widow' at the weekend, and has grown to love the team.
