AN angry vicar today condemned thieves who broke into his Oxford church and damaged a valuable antique door.
The Rev Brian Mountford, the vicar at the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, condemned burglars who raided the High Street place of worship on Saturday.
Thieves forced the wooden door installed in 1827 and caused £500 damage. They also stole £50 from a collection box.
Mr Mountford said: "We have called in university surveyors to repair the door and they are excellent craftsmen, so we are hopeful that it can be fully repaired.
"It is very regrettable that we should be targeted in this way. A window overlooking the High Street was also smashed but we were lucky it was not stained glass."
Police are appealing for anyone with information about the break-in, which took place at 8am on Saturday, to contact them on 01865 266333.
