CHIP shop owners Andreas and Kyriakou Sergiou hope to satisfy more than just the hunger of their customers in the run-up to a national competition.

To help them in the challenge to become the nation's best chip shop, the couple have struck a deal to have regular deliveries of a potato claimed to be a potent aphrodisiac

The Maris Piper is commonly known in France as the Apple of Love, with the amorous French convinced it helps spice up their love lives.

The couple's son, Serge, said he hoped it could now do the same for the customers who visit Salamis Fish Bar in Ock Street, Abingdon.

However, he admitted: "It hasn't worked for me, but I'll keep on trying!"

The shop has used Maris Pipers in the past - but the new delivery deal should now ensure they are used regularly. Mr and Mrs Sergiou are also having fresh fish delivered from Grimsby overnight.

The shop won through to the regional finals of the competition last year.

Serge said: "Our aim is to win it overall this year."
