PEOPLE living near a layby which gipsies have just moved from are furious at the mess they have left behind.

Household rubbish and even human waste has been dumped on the site at Oxford Road, Dorchester, where the families in six caravans left.

One of the families was ordered to leave the site after losing a last ditch battle in the High Court last week.

Brian Griffith, of Oxford Road, described the gipsies as "lepers of society" and was angry that the public would have to pay for the clean-up operation.

"The gipsies cannot seem to do anything else but leave a mess behind them," he said, adding that the layby seems to have become a permanent gipsy site. "I'm sure that half the reason for their unpopularity is the mess and that the council has to clear up after them.

"Everybody feels the same. I don't know anybody who doesn't feel the same."

Another Oxford Road resident, who did not wish to be named, added: "I have nothing against them personally but I cannot bear the mess they leave behind.

"Why can't they find somewhere miles away from anywhere?

"I have lived here for about six years and the situation has actually got worse," she added.

It is not known where the families have moved to, but South Oxfordshire District Council's environmental health manager, Mr Gary Vail, said the mess would be cleared up as soon as possible at the public's expense.

He added that the cost of the work may be shared with Oxfordshire County Council, as it is responsible for highways.
