New bowls star Les Gillett, from the Banbury club, came from behind to beat holder Hugh Duff in the first round of the SAGA World Indoor Championship at Preston yesterday.
Gillett, who knocked out Duff on the way to his shock victory in the International Open title at the same venue in October, repeated the dose with an exciting 2-7, 7-1, 4-7, 7-6, 7-4 victory in front of the BBC television cameras.
The sometimes scrappy contest seemed to be heading Duff's way, when the Scot led 4-2 in the fourth set, but Gillett turned it around with a maximum count of four and sneaked the set 7-6.
With many of the sport's big guns knocked out in the first round, Gillett must stand a good chance of bringing the world championship back to Oxfordshire.
