CO-OP boss Bob Burlton unveiled a computer-generated image of the proposed new superstore at Carterton as the society unveiled record results.

Work is due to start later this year on the superstore in Black Bourton Road, which will be built on the site of the existing supermarket.

Co-op spokeswoman Karen Webb said the plan was to replace the existing 8,000 sq ft store with a new superstore totalling 27,000 sq ft.

She said: "If everything goes according to plan we aim to start work sometime in June."

Latest figures from the Oxford, Swindon & Gloucester Co-op show profits last year rose to £6.6m, an increase of more than 30 per cent on the previous year's figure.

Chief executive Mr Burlton said the results were excellent and had strengthened the society's financial position.

He said: "The year has been one of continued investment and improvement aimed at improving our stores and providing our customers with the finest customer service levels possible."

He said the rise in profits follows a year of continued growth and investment in the society's four main trading divisions - food, motor, funeral and travel.

Mr Burlton added: "The society has enjoyed a very successful year in which we have improved profitability, reduced borrowings and enhanced the value of the society."

Last year the society recruited more than 5,000 new members. The Co-op is owned locally by the community it serves and members play an active role in its running.
