OXFORD University's new look side had Sussex reeling on the opening day of the first-class season in the Parks yesterday but a dropped catch after lunch let them off the hook.

Despite the rain and snow of the previous days, the match started on time and James Fulton, the University's new captain, was soon rewarded after winning the toss and putting the county in.

Ross Garland claimed his first wicket in first-class cricket, yorking Wasim Khan in the tenth over and South African seamer David Eadie struck twice six overs later.

At 42, Chris Adams, leading Sussex for the first time, fell to a juggling catch by Byron Byrne at cover point and the next ball was edged by Mark Newell to Mark Wagh in the slips.

David Mather, who played little cricket last year, reduced Sussex to 49-4 when Toby Peirce was caught at the wicket before Neil Taylor and Keith Newell steadied the boat.

They moved the score to 90-4 at lunch but in the first over on the resumption Newell edged Eadie and Larry Buchanan behind the stumps got a hand to the ball but could not hold it.

The fifth pair each completed half centuries and put on 132 before rain ended play 68 minutes early.
