AMBULANCE crews and motorists risked their lives to save two people after two cars collided head on, killing their drivers, it was revealed today.

Passing motorists stopped and pulled one woman clear of a Jaguar. Then paramedics arrived and rescued a woman from a Ford Escort.

The crash happened on the A44 Oxford-Chipping Norton road, north of Kidlington, on Wednesday.

Pc Phil Murray paid tribute to people who stopped after the crash and gave help.

He said: "A number of drivers and passengers from other vehicles did their best to help the victims and they managed to release the woman from the Jaguar. That car was starting to smoke after the impact. It was a brave thing to do."

Two paramedics ignored their own safety to rescue a 70-year-old woman suffering from multiple injuries from the Escort.

Dave Hogg, control superintendent at Oxfordshire Ambulance Service, said: "There was the potential for the Escort to burst into flames because of the raw petrol and the warm temperature.

"They were a couple of brave paramedics for doing what they did."

The road was closed by police for more than four hours.

The two women were taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. The two drivers died at the scene. They have not yet been named but are thought to come from Warwickshire and Surrey.
