MORE than 1,500 runners braved soaring temperatures to make the Oxford Mail Town and Gown Fun Run another searing success.
The 10k race in the University Parks yesterday is expected to raise at least £20,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Group.
St John Ambulance volunteers were on hand to help a few runners who fell victim to dehydration. But there was still no shortage of those feeling the heat dressed as spacemen and ballet dancers.
Matt Hope, 20, who is reading Maths at St Hugh's College, was one of four male-students to don pink tutus and tights. "It was hot. But I'm more used to playing ice hockey than running around dressed like this. But we reckon to have raised £200," he said.
A new course record was set in in the women's race by Emma Coleman, 27, from Watford who finished in 37 min 40 secs
Peter Haarer, 30, of Balliol College, Oxford, missed out by just four seconds from making it a home win in the men's race. He finished second to Donald Naylor from Edinburgh, who finished in 32 min 23 secs
Don't miss tomorrow's Oxford Mail for the full results.
