MOTORISTS can expect delays as road works begin on Oxford's Botley Road today.

The works are taking place at both ends of the road between Seacourt Tower and the railway station. There will be an access lane for cars going to Seacourt park-and-ride from the Botley Interchange, and new cycle lanes, footbridges and pelican crossings between Binsey Lane and the station.

Mike Rant, county engineer for Oxfordshire County Council, said when the work was finished it would ensure quicker, easier travel by public transport, bicycle and on foot.

He added that Botley Road would have to be closed to general traffic for short periods - outside normal working hours when possible - but access to homes, shops and businesses would be maintained.

"Alternative routes will be signed for traffic which can divert to other routes, particularly Woodstock and Abingdon Roads, during construction," Mr Rant said.

"The completion of the programme of improvements for Botley Road will enhance conditions in accordance with the aims of the Oxford Transport Strategy." At the same time as the county council road works, Railtrack will be continuing work on a new station car park in Becket Street and building a footbridge from the car park across Botley Road to the railway station.

The changes in Botley Road, which have been staggered over more than a year, are part of the Oxford Transport Strategy package.

Council road engineers said the cycle tracks and bus lanes, along with better paving and lighting, were necessary before city centre measures like the pedestrianisation of Cornmarket and closure of High Street to through traffic could go ahead.

The roadworks will involve lane closures and delays to traffic bound for Botley Road and West Way from the A34 and the A420.

They have been timed to coincide with school holidays.
