Applications are flooding in from job-seekers keen to become town clerk.

Wallingford Town Council is seeking a replacement for Patricia Dawe, who leaves in March. Mrs Dawe from Morningford Road, Cholsey, is retiring after holding the post for four years. She said she wasn't surprised there had been such a good response from applicants.

She said: "It can be very stressful but is one of the loveliest jobs in the country. You are dealing with people all the time, which is very interesting and you don't know what is going to hit you in the morning."

"Town clerks of parishes and bigger towns like Wallingford are always looking to better themselves and clerks have become a professional body so a lot of people are interested." Contact her at

She added: "I would encourage anybody with an interest in the town and a local government background to apply."

Application forms and further details are available from the Town Clerk,9 St Martin's Street if you are interested.
