THAME United's hopes of going all the way to Wembley in the FA Carlsberg Vase have been knocked by their quarter-final opponents Woodbridge Town signing up two quality experienced players just for Saturday's game, writes JON MURRAY.

Former Ipswich Town stars John Wark and Paul Mason have signed for the Suffolk club to "fill in" because of injuries.

Wark, who won FA Cup and UEFA Cup medals with Ipswich, a League Championship with Liverpool and 29 caps for Scotland, is now 42.

But Mason, 35, Ipswich's top scorer two seasons ago, was playing for Town at the start of this season before the club cancelled his contract after a disagreement about the player's fitness.

Formerly a prolific scorer with Aberdeen, he is likely to be a major threat to Thame.

Both Wark and Mason were playing for Windsor & Eton in a veterans competition, but Woodbridge have been able to sign them because neither was attached to a club. Wark has been scouting for Ipswich boss George Burley.

When told of Woodbridge's double coup, Thame United manager Andy Sinnott said: "It will add a bit more spice to it. But if you look at the Ryman League the likes of Kerry Dixon are playing on a regular basis and not pulling up any trees.

"It doesn't frighten us."

Gary Barker, Woodbridge Town's assistant manager, said: "Both Wark and Mason have a great pedigree, we couldn't ask for anything more.

"Usually, most Saturdays John is away scouting on the opposition for Ipswich or eyeing up players for George Burley to sign so we're lucky to have him. They are both class players."
