A pub landlord who leased his home to a social housing agency claims his good deed has gone sour.

David Mills said his Cowley house, leased from him for five years in late 1994 by Oxford Social Lettings Agency, was returned to him last month in a filthy condition.

"I wouldn't expect a pig to live here," he said.

He dealt with the company because it advertised that houses would be returned in good condition. But he says it reneged on this commitment and he is demanding that it puts things right. His complaints includes dirty carpets covered in cigarette burns, bathroom mould painted over without treatment, a fireplace and freezer missing, peeling paint on all windows and damage to a stone wall repaired with concrete blocks.

Mr Mills, who lives in Jersey, but bought the house in Napier Road, said: "I was also told that the house had been re-wired, but I've never seen the certificate, despite asking many times. The firm guaranteed it would be looked after properly. I just want them to put it right." Mark Hammond, operations director for the agency, said: "We have received a formal complaint from Mr Mills and will be looking into it."

He said the agency returned properties to owners in the condition given, minus fair wear and tear.
