Nesta Woolford celebrated her 21st birthday in the best possible fashion by winning her second Oxfordshire County Ladies Championship.

The Frilford Heath golfer, who won her first title as a teenager in 1998, beat Huntercombe's Alison Kelly by a single hole in the final at Chipping Norton and was then presented with a celebratory bottle of champagne.

Kelly squared an exciting match at the 17th hole, but then lost the last to a par.

In the semi-finals, Woolford cruised home 6 & 5 against Lyneham's Amanda Scott, while Kelly beat former champion Nicola Sparks (Burford ) by one hole.

Earlier in the week, Woolford had showed her class by winning the qualifying competition, which was played in rain and wind, and was only completed thanks to the host club's greenstaff. Woolford headed the 16 qualifiers with a two-round total of 160, five clear of Sparks. The winner of the 36-hole net prize was Gail Jeacock, of Brailes.

Three county juniors Zoe Humphris (Lyneham), and the Frilford duo of Narelle Ives and Jo Corkish qualified for the championship, with Ives reaching the quarter-finals.

The second 16 finishers in the qualifiying competition then played in the Lucy Davies Trophy. This was won by Caroline Nash (Huntercombe) who beat Elizabeth Bright (Oxford Ladies) by 2 & 1.
