Thame's promotion hopes in Ryman League Division 1 were rocked when ten-men Romford scored an injury-time equaliser at Windmill Stadium on Saturday to make the final score 1-1.

Thame had dominated the proceedings from the start, and it looked as if Paul Sherwood's 24th-minute strike would give them three precious points.

But in time added on they gave away possession from a throw deep in the Romford half, Chris Rose hit a long ball into the path of substitute Mervin Abraham, who beat Ian Moores with a low shot.

Now Thame must rely on Maidenhead dropping points in their home games against Romford and Croydon on Wednesday and Thursday before United visit Maidenhead on Saturday when a win could still see them promoted. Sherwood had finished in style from 12 yards after being set up by Mark West to give Thame the lead.

Sherwood again went close when he forced a fine save from Jason White.

Romford's keeper was again in action from the resulting corner, acrobatically saving Martin Brown's header.

Immediately after the break, another Mark Jones corner fell to Sherwood, but White was again alert to save.

The overworked keeper then denied both Jones and Sherwood with his legs.

On the hour, Romford were reduced to ten men when Danny Winney was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Jones should have wrapped things up for Thame, but his header lacked power and direction from six yards. White again came to Romford's rescue two minutes from time, tipping over Nando Perna's 20-yard drive.

But with the game well into injury time, Abraham stunned Thame by equalising.
