A FIRM has invested more than 3.5m in developing a state-of-the-art centrepiece for the Chelsea Flower Show, writes David Duffy.

De Boer Structures, of Middleton Road, Banbury, specialise in creating temporary structures for major shows, sporting events and exhibitions.

Managing director Jeremy Perkins said the company would "build something for Chelsea which will shake the industry." He said the structure, called the Delta System, would be higher, lighter and brighter than anything used at previous shows on the 11-acre site in the grounds of the Royal Hospital in South West London.

His team started work on the site last week and plan to hand over the structure well in advance of the show, which runs from May 23 to 26.

Mr Perkins said: "Traditionally the horticultural show market have only wanted breathable, canvas pole tents in which to exhibit.

"Now we have developed a lighter, airier structure with a higher roof feature that will make life easier for garden designers to work in and more comfortable for the viewing public. This year's show is the first of a ten-year Chelsea contract for De Boer.

Notcutts Garden Centre, of Nuneham Courtenay, is launching the first build-up to the Chelsea Flower Show live on the World Wide Web. Its website www.notcutts.co.uk shows behind-the-scenes preparation for the show.
