BRIGHT ideas from Oxfordshire students won prizes in a scheme intended to encourage the next generation of designers, scientists and engineers, writes Maggie Hartford.
More than 30 A-level design and technology students received grants from the Oxford Trust, a charity which promotes science and enterprise.
The 500 prize for the school making most effective use of the scheme was split this year between Bloxham School and Larkmead School. The 500 prize was sponsored for the second year by HSBC.
Four individual prizes of 50 were also awarded by The Oxford Trust. The most innovative idea came from Daryl Pearce from Bloxham School, with an automatic farm gate opening system. Christopher Knibbs from Marlborough School won best manufactured project with a car camera mount for road sport training.
Paul Kearns from Larkmead School, who built a wind tunnel for school physics lessons, won a prize for careful science investigation.
Paul Wilkins from St Augustine's School won a prize for working best with his 'technical advisor' Peter Jackson. He made a pedal vehicle for a disabled child.
