Schools across the county scored record results in their GCSEs yesterday, writes Madeleine Pennell.

There was a two per cent rise in the pass rate nationally, with girls scoring better than boys in every subject except maths.

There were spectacular successes at Abingdon School where 36.1 per cent of the grades were A* a ten per cent rise on last year and the pass rate was 99.2 per cent. Records were broken at Cheney School, Oxford, where the 200 students gained 287 grade As, of which 119 were A*, beating the previous figure of 244 As. The number achieving five A* to C rose from 36.7 per cent to 39.1 per cent.

The number of five A* to C grades increased significantly on last year from 55 per cent to 67 per cent at Cherwell School, Oxford. The overall pass rate was 99.5 per cent.

At Headington Girls School in Oxford, 31 out of 74 pupils got nine or more A or A* grades at GCSE and two girls scored ten A* and got an extra qualification in RE.

At Oxford High School for Girls, 45.24 per cent of the 77 candidates gained A*s and 99.87 per cent had A* to C grades. Magdalen College School, Oxford, scored its best ever GCSE results with 70 per cent of grades being A* and A and 100 per cent of pupils getting at least seven A* to C grades.

At St Edward's School in Woodstock Road, Oxford, 50 per cent of all the grades awarded were A* or A grades.

Out of 114 candidates, 113 achieved a minimum of five A* to C grades and the overall pass rate was 100 per cent.

Rye St Anthony School in Pullens Lane, Oxford, had 60 per cent of its pupils scoring ten or 11 A* to Cs and 50 per cent of all its grades were A* or As. At Wychwood School, Banbury Road, Oxford, there was a 91 per cent pass rate and 90 per cent gained five A* to Cs.

St Augustine of Canterbury Upper School, Iffley Turn, Oxford, had an overall pass rate of 97 per cent and the five A* to C rate was 34 per cent.

Headteacher Elisabeth Gilpin said the results were exceptional for a year group which had 33 per cent of pupils on free school meals, one of the highest figures in the county.

Peers School in Littlemore achieved an eight per cent rise on last year's score with a five A* to C grade rate of 35 per cent and a 90 per cent overall pass rate. GCSE results improved for the second year running at Matthew Arnold School, Cumnor, where 50.5 per cent of the 111 students gained five A* to Cs. The pass rate was 98 per cent.

D'Overbroeck's College achieved its best ever GCSE results with 100 per cent getting five passes at A* to C, and nearly half of the grades being A or A*.

St Helen and St Katharine School, Abingdon had no results below grade C and more than half the girls obtained grades of all A or A*, with eight pupils getting a full set of A* grades. At Fitzharrys School, Abingdon, Danial Whale, with ten A*s and an A and Jenna Smith, with seven A*s and four As, were the outstanding pupils.

John Mason School, Abingdon, achieved its best ever results with 62 per cent of pupils scoring five grade A* to Cs and a pass rate of 83 per cent.

Larkmead School in Abingdon's Year Nine pupil Michael Wallace got an A* in Maths, although he will not take the rest of his GCSEs until 2002. Five or more A* to C grades were scored by 45 per cent of pupils. At King Alfred's in Wantage, the pass rate was 99 per cent and 27 per cent gained nine or more A* to Cs.

Wallingford School had 54 per cent getting A to C grades, well up on last year's figures, and 35 per cent of pupils got an A grade in at least one subject.

At Lord Williams's, Thame, the pass rate was 99 per cent and 60 per cent got five A* to Cs.

At Didcot Girls' School, 67 per cent of 197 girls achieved five or more A* to Cs. Emily Mansfield, 15, took her GCSEs a year early and got ten A*s and one A grade. Jen Lewis got ten A*s. The pass rate was 99.4 per cent, and 72 per cent of all grades were A* to C.

At St Birinus Boys' School, Didcot, 45 per cent scooped five A* to C grades and the pass rate was 98 per cent.

At Witney's Wood Green School 160 pupils achieved a 99 per cent pass rate and in the A to C grades there was a 60 per cent pass rate.

Henry Box School, Witney, had a record 99 per cent pass rate the same figure as Burford School. Bartholomew School, Eynsham, had a 97 per cent pass rate and 63 per cent achieved five or more A to C grades.

The Marlborough School, Woodstock, got its best ever results, with 63 per cent of pupils scoring five grades A to C.

At Carterton Community College 54 per cent of pupils passed with grades A to C.

Chipping Norton School had one in two pupils achieving five or more A to C grades.

Bicester Community College produced its best ever performance at GCSE with 41.6 per cent getting at least five A*s to C grades. The overall pass rate was 98 per cent. Cooper School, Churchill Road, Bicester, had 49 per cent getting at least five A* to C grades. The overall pass rate was 98 per cent.

Blessed George Napier School, Addison Road, Banbury, achieved its best ever GCSE results with 66 per cent getting five or more A* to C grades. A total of 89 pupils sat the examinations, with nine out of ten getting at least one A* to C grade.

Banbury School had 39 per cent of its 239 students achieving at least five A* to C grades.

At Warriner School, in Bloxham, 182 students sat their GCSEs with 59 per cent gaining at least five A* to C grades. At Chenderit School, in Middleton Cheney, more than 150 pupils sat the exams with 62 per cent achieving at least A* to C grades.

Top public boys' school Radley College again reported excellent GCSE pass rates with a 99.4 per cent overall success rate.

Seventy of the 119 candidates got seven or more A*s or As and the overall percentage of those getting A*s or As was 76.2.
