Volkswagen is expanding its range with the introduction of the Lupo GTI, writes David Duffy.

The most performance-oriented production Lupo, the GTI will be powered by a 1.6-litre 125 horsepower engine.

Its 1.6-litre 16 valve 125 horsepower engine take it from 0 to 62 mph in a shade over eight seconds and on to a top speed of 127mph.

The Lupo GTI weighs just 978kg, a figure achieved through the bonnet, doors and wheel-arches being made of lightweight aluminium.

The engine, which was introduced new to the Volkswagen range in February under the bonnet of the Polo GTI, complies with Euro-4 emissions regulations.

To accommodate this extra power, the Lupo GTI features disc brakes all round, ventilated at the front, and electronic anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distibution. Not only do the engine and aluminium body panels distinguish the GTI from other Lupos, the exterior has also been restyled.

Gone are the cute looks: flared wheelarches, side skirts, a deep front sill, spoiler bumper with integrated air inlets, mesh grille and 15-inch alloy wheels give the Lupo a chunky and purposeful appearance, while at the rear a roof spoiler, twin centrally-mounted chrome exhaust pipes and a GTI badge complete the look. Available in black, red or for the first time in a Lupo, silver, the GTI looks a very 'grown-up' car.

Specification is also high: ABS, twin airbags, remote central locking with an alarm, power steering, an adjustable steering wheel, Isofix-standard child seat fittings, electric windows and a Gamma radio-cassette are all standard.

The Lupo GTI will be available to order in the UK from the end of the year, when prices will also be announced.
