A doctor who argued with a policeman and then injured him by speeding off in her car has been fined.

Consultant psychiatrist Dr Caroline Ramage, 39, of The Leys, Witney, was stopped by Sgt Nicolas Deacon on Church Green, Witney, to allow a carnival to pass through.

Oxford Crown Court heard that the two argued and Ramage tried to drive her red VW Golf around the officer as he reached into the car to pull out the ignition keys.

Paul Mitchell, prosecuting, said Ramage became annoyed even though Sgt Deacon offered his mobile phone so she could inform anyone she needed to that she would be late.

She revved the car, put it into gear and tried to drive around Sgt Deacon but caught his hand and caused a nasty gash. Mr Mitchell said she stopped the car as soon as she realised Sgt Deacon had been injured. Nigel Daly, defending, said Ramage only wanted to travel a short distance to pick up her children and felt Sgt Deacon had misunderstood.

He said: "It was a stupid incident and no more than that."

Ramage admitted careless driving. Judge Tom Corrie said: "In the circumstances, neither you nor it seems to me the officers in this incident covered yourselves in glory. There was a great deal of stubbornness on both sides."

Ramage was fined 750, ordered to pay 100 costs and her licence was endorsed with six points.
