A motorist who parked an untaxed car in a public car park is asking 'why me' after he was booked by police.

Roger Walters, of Mascord Road, Banbury, has compiled a list of 22 other vehicles parked in streets nearby - all without current tax discs.

He says he was trying to sell his vehicle, a 'for sale' notice was in the window, and it was clear he was not using the car.

Mr Walters has sent his list to the police with a letter asking why he was fined while others got away with it.

He said he had put his Lada on a low-loader and moved it to a car park 100 yards away until it was sold.

Mr Walters said: "I put a sale sign on it, but as it was visible from the road the police checked it and reported me for having no road tax."

He went on: "The DVLA told me the car park was maintained at the public expense and was therefore the same as a road."

He said he walked round a few streets on Bretch Hill and noted the registration numbers of cars without valid tax discs.

He said: "If I can find so much law-breaking in one-and-a-half hours walking, why can't the law enforcers."

Insp Fiaz Choudhary, of Banbury police, said: "I have noted the comments about other vehicles in the area which may or may not be properly licensed. Patrolling officers and traffic wardens will keep a watch and report them where appropriate."
