Former chairman of Oxfordshire County Council Michael Fogarty has died, aged 84.

Professor Fogarty was born in Malaya, Burma, in October 1916 and died on January 20, in his sleep.

The story of his life with his wife, Phyllis, is told in his autobiography My Life and Ours, which was published by Thorntons in 1999.

He was commissioned into the Royal Artillery but was seriously wounded in the retreat from Dunkirk and was discharged in 1941.

He started as a professor in economics at Cardiff University before moving to Nuffield College, where he became a Fellow in 1944.

Professor Fogarty's family moved to Foxcombe Road, Boars Hill, in 1958.

He was chairman of the Boars Hill Association Committee, which he helped to set up in 1979.

Professor Fogarty was a member of Sunningwell Parish Council, a Vale of the White Horse district councillor, and represented Kennington, Sunningwell and Radley on Oxfordshire County Council, of which he became chairman.

The Liberal politician stood as an MP in 1974 only to be beaten.

The father-of-four moved to Marlow to live in a flat next door to his daughter, Priscilla, following the death of his wife, Phyllis, in 1998.

A funeral service for Professor Fogarty will be held on Thursday (February 1) at St Peter's Church, St Peter Street, Marlow, at 11.30am.
