Abingdon squandered a two-goal lead at Amersham in Area Division 1 of the South League to go down 3-2.

After Amersham hit the post in the first minute, Abingdon took control in the first half.

They opened the scoring ten minutes into the match when Neil Spencer turned the ball past the Amersham goalkeeper from two yards out at a penalty corner.

Five minutes later, Abingdon increased their lead, also at a penalty corner, as Will Trigg found the back of the net with a well-placed low flick.

Ten minutes before half-time, sloppy Abingdon defending allowed Mark Rutherford to flick the ball high into the net from close range following a free hit just outside the circle.

And early in the second half, Amersham equalised through an Alan Carruthers shot from the edge of the circle.

Then, with quarter of an hour left, Amersham scored the winner with a Mark Worrell strike from 12 yards after a penalty corner.

Banbury's title hopes suffered a knock-back as they lost 3-1 at third-placed Marlow, but mid-table Bicester earned a 1-1 draw at Mill Hill.

Abingdon have been drawn at home to Ashby or London Edwardians in the fourth round of the Men's Vase on February 11. Abingdon reached the last 16 by winning 6-1 away to Horley in the last round.
