A pensioner was seriously hurt when a car skidded on ice, struck him and hurled him into the River Thame.

The man was hit by a VW Golf being driven by a 25-year-old man from Thame.

The injured man, who has not been named by police, lived in Cuddington, near Thame.

Police say the car spun out of control on the ice and hit the man who was walking with his wife, near Cuddington Bridge. He was thrown into the river and was dragged out by a passer-by.

The man had serious leg injuries and is in Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury, where he is said to be "poorly".

Pc Andrew Wayland, who is dealing with the incident, said: "This was not the only accident to occur at the bridge on Sunday morning.

"Only a short time before a woman driver from Haddenham hit the bridge when she lost control of the car.

"She was uninjured but her car was badly damaged."

He urged motorists to slow down in icy weather. He said: "Cars don't lose control on their own.

"It is the driver and what he or she does that causes a car to skid.

"People should take more care, drive more slowly, brake gently in plenty of time and squeeze the accelerator don't push hard on it.

"Give yourself plenty of time."

Police want to speak to anyone who saw anything of the injury incident involving the car striking the man, which happened at 10.45am on Sunday.
