Millions watched on TV as Headington Roadrunners' James Bowler, switching to indoor track running, just failed to win a medal in the men's 1500m at the AAA Championships at the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham, last Saturday.
Oxford Brookes student Bowler, who won the Oxford Mail Cross Country League's race at radley last month, represented his track-and-field club Bromsgrove and Redditch at the meeting and came fifth.
He set a personal best time of 3 mins 49.35 secs which was only 1.33 seconds behind the winner in a tight finish.
Seven Abingdon Amblers John Oliver, Simon Taylor, Roy Lewis, Chris Wheeler, Stewart Twin, Brenda Brown and Hilary O'Shea took part in the universally acclaimed 'Tough Guy' event in Shropshire last Sunday.
The first two Amblers home were Oliver and Taylor, who also represents Eynsham Roadrunners, in 2 hrs 12 mins. The first female Ambler was O'Shea in a time of 2.44 minutes, with Brown coming home in 4 hours.
All money raised went to support both the animal sanctuary where the Tough Guy is sited, and local children's charities.
All seven Amblers have competed in Tough Guy three times and all have sworn never to do it again!
