Schools are being invited to design Web pages to win a multi-media computer and a host of other hi-tech prizes.

The Oxfordshire Schools Web Design Competition is open to all schools, whether they have experience of Web publishing or not.

There are no restrictions on the content and subject for the Web pages so that the competition can easily be integrated into other projects covered in the National Curriculum.

Abingdon-based company Research Machines has donated computers with Internet access for prizes.

There are two categories - one for primary schools and another for secondaries.

As well as the computers, schools could also win a year's free subscription and access to the Internet and the Oxfordshire Schools Computing Challenge silver cup.

Judges will reward entries which excel in content, creativity and technical merit, but will also take into account and give strong emphasis to newcomers to the technology and those with very little experience.

The contest is being organised by the Oxfordshire branch of the British Computer Society.

Spokesman Geoff Stone said: "We are keen to attract newcomers and schools who are very much more familiar with the technology."

Schools not connected to the Internet can save their work on to a floppy disc.

The closing date is May 11.
