Wolpert's depression was, sadly, not unusual. For a prolonged period, he felt utterly hopeless and suicidal. What is unusual is that he is first and foremost a scientist, and this book is his attempt to make sense of what happened to him. He looks at the origins and biological significance of depression, describing what helped him and weighing up the evidence on what works for most people.
