Headington Middle School's footballers reeled off a magnificent seven wins to be crowned south west champions in the Railtrack Play Safe Under 11s six-a-side competition.

Playing under Oxford United's banner, having triumphed at the Manor Ground two weeks ago, Headington pipped previously unbeaten Plymouth 2-1 in the final at Bristol Rovers' training ground.

Mark Bell and John Rixon grabbed the goals which gave Headington a place in the south final at QPR on Thursday, March 29 where they will face the winners from the south east, the midlands and east anglia.

And the prize for the successful side at Loftus Road is a place in the national final at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium before the LDV Vans Trophy final on Sunday, April 22.

In the semi-finals at Bristol, Headington overcame Torquay 4-2 after scoring a hatful of goals in their group stage games.

They trounced Reading 4-0, Bristol Rovers 7-0, Cardiff 8-0, Hereford 7-2 and saw off Exeter 6-1.

Headington are no strangers to success in the competition. They were crowned national champions at Wembley last year, and also played beneath the Twin Towers three years ago.

It's also proved a lucky competition for United, because as well as Headington, they have been represented at Wembley by Temple Cowley Middle School.

Meanwhile, the semi-finals of the Oxford United/Focus Under 9 six-a-side competition take place at the Manor Ground before the clash with Rotherham on Saturday, March 24.

Kirtlington take on St John Fisher (Oxford), while Cholsey face West Kidlington.

The quartet will be battling it out for a place in the final which takes place before United's home game against Oldham Athletic on Saturday, April 7.
