Oxford United boss David Kemp reiterated his determination to make Oxford United a successful side next season - so he doesn't have to grumble about the decisions and ill-fortune which always seem to strike when you're at the bottom.

After play-off hopefuls Wigan edged a 3-2 victory over relegated United at their JJB Stadium on Saturday, Kemp reflected on several verdicts which he doubts would have been given had Oxford not been at the bottom of the table.

"Wayne Hatswell shepherded the ball out of play and he's been penalised for obstruction. Now, I'm not being funny, but how often do you see those decisions given?

"You only get them when you're bottom of the table. Hopefully, we'll be in a position where we're not the bottom team, when we're near the top and then maybe we'll get some of those decisions going our way."

Wigan survived a late rally by United after Paul Dalglish, son of ex-Liverpool star Kenny, was sent off for striking out at Peter Fear.

But Kemp was unhappy at what looked a harsh penalty, awarded against Darren Patterson, just before half-time which turned the match.

"There might have been contact, but the ball was up in the stand when the ref actually gave it. It was unbelievable.

"And for Wigan's third goal, the ball came back off the corner flag to stay in play for them to score. But I don't want to go on about bad luck, because it then sounds as though I'm just using that as an excuse.

"What I will say is that our lads gave it a real blast. We've come to a progressive club that has invested millions, whereas we have invested nothing in our playing squad.

"Two seasons ago we went down, we got only 45 points last season, which is normally enough to get you relegated, and we have been relegated this season.

"We've had six different managers in that time. They're not all dopes . . . there's something about the running of this club that has been causing this. The team has got nowhere by not investing and constantly changing the manager.

"We can't keep running the team down - we've got to invest in it, and then we'll get somewhere.
