Witney Town's fate remains up in the air after the deadline for a decision on the club's future passed without any developments.

Chief executive Brian Constable had warned that Witney could be wound up yesterday if a buyer or a new board of directors hadn't come forward.

But despite no interest being shown in a takeover, Constable said no decision had been made on the club's future.

And in a surprise twist, Witney's chief revealed that one of the options he was considering was to keep the club in the league - but without paying players!

"It is an option that the players who played for Witney would be playing without any pay," he said.

"We have young lads that have come through our under 18s and, while they may not be strong enough, they would certainly play.

"We cannot afford to pay the same wages we have paid over the years which is nigh on £60,000 a year."

He said: "I have spoken to the Dr Martens League and I have told them there are no offers to either purchase the property or lease the property. No-one whatsoever has come forward."

Now Constable is to have talks with Dr Martens League directors on Thursday, May 17 to discuss the situation.

If Witney were to withdraw at this stage it would cost £4,000 - and Constable said he wasn't prepared to pay that sum.

"I am not going to pay £4,000 to withdraw from the league. It seems a waste of money," he said.

And he added: "I want the name of the club and the history of the club to continue.

"Just because the season ended on Saturday, it doesn't mean Witney Town Football Club ended on Saturday."
