A new initiative has been launched to fill empty homes in Oxford.

The city council has set up an action line for members of the public to report private and housing association homes that are not being used.

The council hopes the scheme will alleviate the housing shortage in the city by making full use of available properties.

Barry Page, the council's empty homes officer, said: "Once an empty home has been reported we will endeavour to contact the owner and give advice to get the property back to good use."

Anybody identifying an empty home not known to the council could receive a free Slice card for use at council leisure facilities for one year.

The action line number is 01865 252696.
