Business is booming in Wallingford, with new shops opening despite the sudden closure of the Gateway superstore.

A number of businesses have started new ventures or expanded their premises in the town during recent weeks.

Four of the five new units in St Martin's Street have been snapped up - by Chiltern Florist, Elements Menswear, Masterfloors and Bloomers Sandwich Bar.

Newcomers to the town include CJ Photography, in St Peter's Street, and Classic Beauty, in St Mary's Street.

Waters Violins, previously based at the Lamb Arcade, has moved to larger premises in High Street.

All signs point to the fact that business is booming in Wallingford.

Pat Hayward, chairman of Wallingford Business 2000, said: "Wallingford is becoming a centre for specialist shops rather than the standard High Street multi-nationals. I am pleased to see new shops opening and I understand there are more in the pipeline."

Wallingford's mayor, Theresa Jordan, said the new businesses were "a sign of Wallingford being on the up".

She added: "The sudden closure of Gateway is unfortunate but we must look forward to the future of Waitrose and its contribution to the vitality of the town."
