Oxford City Ladies turned up with only two pairs for their Wilson Inter-Club League Division 1 match at Woodstock, but still left with the points after a 5.5-3.5 victory.

Although City handed Woodstock a 3-0 advantage before a ball had been hit, their first pair of Barbara Gibbins and Esther Simmonds were in no mood to give their opponents any further help, and romped to three convincing victories.

They beat Woodstock's first pair of Shirley Murley and Myra Simmonds 6-1, 6-2, and had equally as little trouble in seeing off the other partnerships of Carol Morgan and Nicola Casey 6-1, 6-3, and Linda Molyneux and Norma Powell 6-0, 6-1.

City's No 2 pair, Andi Padbury and Linda Wastie, dropped their side's only half-point, losing the first set against Murley and Simmonds.

In Mixed Division 2, Norham Gardens had their top two pairs to thank as they beat Bicester B 6-3.

Judy Davis and Peter Mann won all three rubbers in straight sets at No 1 pair, while Gill Kinloch and Richard Bailey collected 2.5 at second pair.

Kate Harding and Anders Markvardsen could only pick up a half at third pair, but ironically, that came against the Bicester first pair of Tracey Steward and Robert Smith.

It was the same story in Division 4 as Southfield beat Banbury 6-3.

Jenny Jones and Terry Eccles, along with Tina Stirling and Jim Norman, were unbeaten for Southfield, both pairs winning all their matches in straight sets.
