Oxford's unbeaten start to the season came to an abrupt halt as they crashed to an emphatic eight-wicket defeat against leaders Henley in their top-of-the-table battle at Jesus College.

The much-anticipated encounter proved a major anti-climax as Oxford were shot out for just 117 off 36.2 overs after being put in to bat.

There was little sign of what was to follow as county duo Keith Mustow and Patrick Jobson took the score past 50 for the second wicket.

Henley's Andy White finishes the match with an off-drive, condemning Oxford to an early defeat in their top-of-the-table encounter

But when they both fell to South African seamer Mark Bredell it triggered an almighty collapse, Cornish left-arm spinner James Hands completing the destruction job with a hat-trick.

Graham Plested and Oxford's South African all-rounder Alan Kruger provided some resistance, but there was no stopping Hands (5-27) and Bredell (4-50) as the last six wickets went down for just 19 runs.

Openers Rob Atkins and David Allaway then shared an opening stand of 56 to set Henley on the way to victory.

After they fell to the spin of Ian Evans and Ian Curtis, Andy White and Bredell (38 no) saw Henley home at 118-2 off 28.3 overs for their fourth win on the spin - the match finishing at 4.15pm.
