A scheme to slow traffic in Wolvercote has been met with criticism from villagers.

Oxford City Council is consulting residents about plans to install mini-roundabouts on Godstow Road at the junctions with Mere Road and Wolvercote Green.

A parking bay for ten cars on Godstow Road outside Wolvercote Village Hall and a traffic island in the centre of the road for pedestrians to use as a refuge are also included in the plans. Cyclists travelling between Oxford and Woodstock would be diverted along Mere Road or Wolvercote Green.

Council cycling officer Nigel Coates said it had £15,000 to spend on slowing traffic and claimed mini-roundabouts were the only practical option.

But people visiting an exhibition at the village hall were against the scheme.

David Humphrey, chairman of the Wolvercote Commoners' Committee said: "We believe from statistics from the Road Traffic Laboratory that mini-roundabouts are more dangerous for two-wheeled vehicles, particularly cyclists, than a normal junction."

Dr Joyce Dargay, of Godstow Road, said: "This is going to cause more problems than it is going to solve.

"There are places in Oxford where there are traffic problems and they should deal with those."

Pat Maddox, of Wolvercote Green, said: "What local people want is a pedestrian crossing on Godstow Road by the bus stop.
