A Conservative campaigner has been accused of misleading voters over the future of a village library.
The Liberal Democrat county council candidate for Grove, Zoe Patrick, has attacked Tory rival Amanda Harland over comments in the spring edition of the newsletter.
In it, Miss Harland claimed the library was threatened by closure and had suffered a reduction in opening hours. She added: "I will campaign to improve educational standards and to maintain the library service in Grove."
Mrs Patrick, who represents Grove on the Vale of White Horse District Council, said: "The facts are that Grove library was threatened with closure over two years ago, but was saved by the formation of the Friends of Grove Library, a group of hard-working residents.
"As previous secretary of this group, I know they had absolutely nothing to do with Amanda Harland who is a resident of Wantage. Library hours in Grove were not reduced, and this is because the Friends, alongside villagers, have tirelessly been fundraising to pay for the hours that might have been lost."
Miss Harland denied she had misled people, saying she believed the library was still under threat.
She said: "The money to support it should have been raised by the council. It is not up to volunteers to keep what is a vital service open. Grove Liberal Democrat councillors should have worked to make sure it wasn't under threat."
"I find it rather odd that Zoe Patrick has picked up on a leaflet that is three months old. Maybe she is worried about the level of support for me in Grove."
