A boozer's guide to good health starts this week when medical staff visit pubs to provide on-the-spot check-ups.

A new project aimed at promoting health care among men will be launched in Banbury and Brackley on Wednesday (June 20) by Cherwell District Council and the Cherwell Vale Primary Care Trust.

The scheme involves health visitors being available for advice and support in pubs throughout the area.

Health promotion officer Beccy White said: "We recognise that men might find it difficult to find time to visit their doctor for a routine check-up, which is why we thought 'if you can't come to us we'll come to you.' "

Some of the health sessions will have a touch of magic. Magician Paul Kybert will join the medical workers at The Pepperpot, Banbury, on June 27, and The Plough, Brackley, on June 28.

Cherwell Vale Primary Care Trust says 45 per cent of men are overweight and another 17 per cent are obese. About 27 per cent of men drink more than the recommended limits, and every day 300 people die of smoking-related diseases.
