A lorry driver whose vehicle crossed the central reservation of the M40 on the Oxfordshire-Warwickshire border has had his arm amputated.
The man, who also suffered broken ribs, is in the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, where his condition is said to be stable.
The driver of a Fiat car involved in the accident, which happened on Friday, is also in hospital recovering from a broken arm and leg. In neither case are the injuries described as life-threatening.
Pc Simon Bishop, of Bicester traffic police, renewed an appeal for witnesses, particularly from users of the southbound carriageway.
He said: "We want to know if anybody saw the blue and white curtain-sided lorry or a silver Renault Megane, around the time of the accident.
"I want to know why and how the lorry came to cross the central reservation."
