Three men have been arrested on suspicion of arson after an explosion destroyed two cars.

The explosion in the early hours of Sunday (June 17), believed to have been caused by industrial explosives, destroyed two cars parked in Banbury's Ruscote Arcade.

The roof of a Citroen car was blasted off shortly after midnight and the fire spread to a nearby Peugeot. The Citroen's roof landed on the other side of the road. Two other cars parked nearby were also damaged by the fire.

Police are linking the explosion with two others in the town earlier this year - one in a metal bin at Hardwick Junior School and another in a manhole in Danesmoor.

Det Con Keith Jones said: "The consequences of flying debris from the cars hitting passers-by would have been very serious. Witnesses have reported hearing muffled bangs and seeing sparks in the car before the explosion.

"A number of youths were seen running away."

Three men aged between 17 and 21 were later arrested.
