Philip Webb, the newly-appointed chairman of Witney United, has made finding a ground a priority for the fledgling club.

Webb, who has found himself at the helm of the club which has risen out of the ashes of Witney Town, said: "It is obviously a big hurdle for us to get a ground of our own, but this is just one of the things on our agenda, it would be premature to say anything else at this stage.

"But there are all sorts of grants available, and we have already had promises of money.

"For example, the chairman of Chelmsford City, who played Witney Town last season, has already said that there will be a cheque in the post."

Webb is encouraged by the response of fans since Witney Town folded, and is hoping that their support will ensure the club succeeds.

"We had a surprisingly good response to our meeting last week, it seems a lot of people want to get involved," he added.

"We want to run a club where everyone who wants to get involved can.

"We are hoping that football will be run in a different way - not in the confrontational way that it has been of late.

"We are hoping the support will grow over the next few weeks when our ideas and aims are put into the public eye.

"We want to work with the people of Witney - and want to be with them rather than against them."

The new club meet again at the Palace nightclub, Witney tonight (8.30).

*Striker Richard Bourne and wingback Geoff Neville have become the first Witney Town players to find a new club.

The pair have been snapped up, following Witney's demise, by former Town boss Andy Lyne, who is now in charge at AFC Newbury.

For Neville the move represents a return to his old club, who play in the Jewson Wessex League.

Lyne said: "Both are well suited because of the type of football we play.

"The chairman has decided to have a real crack at it this year to get into the Southern League and to have a go at the Vase as well."

Lyne added that he was in talks with three other Witney players, but declined to name them at this stage.
