Estate families are angry their privacy and an important wildlife habitat is being destroyed because of what they claim is the "chainsaw massacre" of part of a 15ft-high hedgerow.
Among others, John Rogerson and his wife Sarah, were furious when maintenance workers from Sovereign Housing Association started to reduce the height of a hedge running along their gardens at Roding Way, Ladygrove, Didcot.
Sarah Rogerson Mrs Rogerson stopped workmen moments before they were about to cut through her part of the hedge. She said it "amounted to a massacre of the hedge by chainsaw", and is organising a petition.
Nick Wood, Sovereign's housing services manager, said: "Our staff were asked to trim the hedge back to a manageable height so that it can be maintained without steps or specialist tools."
He added: "We will make a further visit to the site on Friday to assess if other sections of the hedge should be trimmed to a different height."
He said work had been delayed until nesting was
over.
